James Campbell — clarinet

James Campbell has followed his muse to five television specials, more than 40 recordings, over 30 works commissioned, a Juno Award (Stolen Gems), a Roy Thomson Hall Award, Canada’s Artist of the Year, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and Canada’s highest honor, the Order of Canada. Called by the Toronto Star “Canada’s pre-eminent clarinetist and wind soloist”, James Campbell has performed solo and chamber music concerts in 30 countries in many of the worlds great concert halls: London’s Wigmore and Queen Elizabeth Halls, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Tokyo’s Suntory Hall, Paris’s Theatre Champs-Elysees, Washington’s Kennedy Centre and Symphony Hall, Boston.

He has been soloist with over 60 orchestras, including the Boston Pops, the London Symphony, the London Philharmonic, the Russian Philharmonic, and the Montreal Symphony and has performed Copland’s Clarinet Concerto four times with Aaron Copland conducting. He has appeared with over 30 string quartets, including the Amadeus (when he replaced an ailing Benny Goodman on a tour of California), Guarneri, Vermeer, New Zealand, Fine Arts, Allegri and St Lawrence Quartets. Of Campbell’s extensive discography many have won international acclaim. His recording of the Brahms Clarinet Quintet with the Allegri Quartet was voted “Top Choice” by BBC Radio 3 and the London Times and Stolen Gems, a recording of lighter classics, won a Juno Award (Canada’s Grammy). James has recorded with the London Symphony (the world premiere recording of Brahms Sonata Op. 120 No. 1 orchestrated by Luciano Berio and Weber Concerto No.1), the Philharmonia (Debussy Premier Rhapsody), the London Philharmonic (Saint-Saens Tarantella), and the NACO (Mozart and Copland Concertos). Sony Classical has recently re-released his recording of the Debussy Premier Rhapsody with Glenn Gould.

Since 1985, James Campbell has been Artistic Director of the Festival of the Sound, the annual summer Canadian chamber music festival, and has programmed over 1300 concerts for the festival. Under his direction the Festival has traveled to England, Japan, and the Netherlands and it has been the subject of documentaries by BBC Television, CBC Television and TV Ontario.

Campbell is the subject of numerous features and cover stories in Clarinet Magazine (USA), Clarinet and Sax (UK), Piper Magazine (Japan), Gramophone, and in the book Clarinet Virtuosi of Today, by British author and clarinet authority Pamela Weston. James continues to explore and expand musically, his most recent collaboration being Spirit ’20, created at Festival of the Sound in, 2010. The six member ensemble explores the music of the roaring 20’s in new and innovative ways. James Campbell has been Professor of Music at the prestigious Jacobs School of Music, Indiana University since 1988.

Vincente Huerta — violin

Vincente Huerta began his studies at the Unió Musical de Llíria at the age of five, then he studied at the conservatories of Valencia and Barcelona; and finished his studies in the Royal Conservatory of Music of Brussels with professors T. Adamopoulos and Agustín León Ara, obtaining the highest awards and the Virtuosity Award “Avec la plus grand distinction.” He won First prize in the Martínez Baguena, Ciudad de Soria and Gyenes violin competitions.

He has collaborated with world-famous artists such as Yehudi Menuhin, Jorge Bolet, Gerard Causé, Marçal Cervera, Yvry Gitlys, and Nobuko Imai. As a soloist he has performed with an extensive repertoire in most European countries under the baton of conductors like; Gianandrea Noseda, Meir Minsky, Michael Thomas, Robert Jansens, L Dewez, E García Asensio, Max Bragado, Henri Adams, Odón Alonso, Boguslaw Madey, Álvaro Albiach, and many others.

Vicente Huerta has been a violin teacher at the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, as well as at the Universitat de Valencia, his students receiving the most important awards in the main international competitions (Sibelius, Tchaikovsky, Tibor Varga, Wienawsky, Queen Elisabeth…), as well as prominent positions in many European orchestras.

He recorded the violin part of the original soundtrack composed by Alberto Iglesias for the film “La Piel que Habito” by Pedro Almodóvar, being awarded the “Goya” prize for the best Soundtrack in 2012.

He has been developing an intense pedagogical activity, with many students getting positions in orchestras in Spain and Europe, and he is regularly invited as a teacher in the principal Spanish youth orchestras; JONDE (National Spanish Youth Orchestra), OJA (Andalusia), EGO (Basque Country), JORVAL (Valencian region), OJRM (Murcia), and others.

Trio Helios

Surrounded by Chamber Music since their youngest age, Eva Zavaro (violin), Raphaël Jouan (cello) and Alexis Gournel (piano) have been exploring with passion the diverse repertoire for piano trio.

After meeting at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse of Paris, they founded the Hélios Trio in 2014. They have had the opportunity to play in different venues such as the Philharmonie de Paris, Salle Cortot, the Lyon Opera House, and the Phoenix Hall in Osaka. They are regularly invited to numerous festivals such as the Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron, the “Folles Journées” (Nantes, Tokyo, and Warsaw), Festival Pablo Casals in Prades, Rencontres Musicales d’Evian, Festival d’Auvers-sur-Oise, Festival de Beauvais… They have been invited to perform during the live radio show “Générations France Musique”, and have been “Ensemble en résidence” at the Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron in 2015 and 2016 and at the Festival des Arcs from 2016 to 2018.

In 2016, the composer Patrick Otto dedicated his piece “Orients” to them. The same year, they perform for the first time Beethoven’s Triple Concerto which they have played several times since then with orchestras in Paris and Rennes, as well as with the Lyon Opera House Orchestra.

Over the past years, they have gained visibility through several international prizes such as their 2nd Prize at the Lyon International Chamber Music Competition in 2018, as well as their Special Prize at the Liszt Competition and 2nd Prize at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in 2019. They were also awarded 2nd Prize and the Audience Prize at the International Chamber Music Competition of Illzach, the Grand Prize at the AEAFC “Prix d’Europe” Competition, the Honor Prize at the International Léopold Bellan Competition, a Grant from the FNAPEC after their performance during the “Musiques d’Ensemble de Paris” Competition, and the KammerMusik Preis (2018), Klavierkammermusik Preis and Wiener Klassik Preis (2019) at the Isa Festival in Reichenau, Austria.

They studied at the CNSMD of Paris with Claire Désert and Ami Flammer (Bachelor’s degree) and then with Itamar Golan and François Salque (Master’s Degree) and is currently studying in the Artist Diploma Degree (DAI). ECMA members (European Chamber Music Academy) since 2018, they regularly receive the teachings of Hatto Beyerle, Johannes Meissl, Patrick Jüdt… The Trio also benefited from masterclasses with the Wanderer Trio, Emmanuel Strosser, Yovan Markovitch, Gary Hoffman, Christian Ivaldi, Guillaume Sutre, Kidon Kremer, the members of the Ebene, Talich and Modigliani Quartets… In March 2018, they were counseled by Gautier Capuçon on the Triple Concerto during a masterclass at the Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris filmed by Medici.tv.

The Trio is supported by the Fondation Safran and the Fondation l’Or du Rhin, and is represented by the Claire Laballery Agency.

Samuel Espinosa Ruiz — viola

Samuel Espinosa Ruiz graduated from the Royal College of Music in London, he completed his Master’s studies at the Hochschule für Musik in Dresden (Germany) with Professor Pauline Sachse.  He was a member of the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) and has collaborated with Spira Mirabilis.  He was an academy member of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB), where he was later hired. He obtained a temporary contract at the Leipzig Gewandhausorchester, and has collaborated with the Staatskapelle Dresden, working with conductors such as Daniele Gatti.

He was a fellow of the German chamber music foundation Villa Musica Rheinland-Pfalz. He won the First Prize and the Critics’ Prize in the El Primer Palau 2015 cycle together with the Vasnier Trio. He is a founding member of the Bambú Ensemble, the only stable string octet on the Spanish music scene and with which he has recently recorded an album for the IBS Classical label with works by Shostakovich and Enescu, among others.

Since 2021 he has been a member of the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, the titular ensemble of the Palau de Les Arts.

Cameron Crozman — Artistic Director — cello

Named “Canada’s next big cello star” by CBC Music and the 2019-20 Classical Revelation artist of Radio-Canada, Canadian cellist Cameron Crozman performs everywhere from the Paris Philharmonie to Quidi Vidi Brewery in St. John’s, NL. He has appeared as a soloist with major orchestras and performed recitals and chamber music across Canada, the USA, and Europe. As the recipient of the Canada Council Michael Measure’s prize, he was the featured soloist with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada during their 2012 tour of Canada and the USA. An avid collaborator and chamber musician, Cameron regularly shares the stage with world-renowned artists including James Ehnes, Augustin Hadelich, André Laplante, and James Campbell.

Cameron’s debut album, Cavatine, recorded on the ca. 1696 “Bonjour” Stradivarius cello, was released to critical acclaim on the ATMA Classique label in 2019, and described by the French publication Classica Magazine as displaying “technical perfection with a personal style that leaves us wanting to hear more.” His most recent release from January 2021, Tapeo, features a program of Spanish-inspired music. His performances have been broadcast on CBC/Radio-Canada, Radio France, Radio Classique, and Medici.tv.

Cameron was one of 6 cellists from around the world chosen to take part in Gautier Capuçon’s 2016-17 Classe d’Excellence at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. After studies with Paul Pulford in Canada, he went on to receive his Master’s level in cello and chamber music from the Paris Conservatoire studying cello with Michel Strauss, chamber music with Claire Désert, and baroque cello with Bruno Cocset. Deeply committed to innovation in classical music, Cameron constantly imagines new ways to share his art with the world. He is active in leading projects commissioning and premiering new music from Canadian composers including Allan Gordon Bell, Alexina Louie, Kelly-Marie Murphy, and Liam Ritz. Believing in the power of music to tell stories, he has recently taken on projects assisting as artistic director in collaboration with Jeunesse Musicales Canada in Montreal and the Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, ON. He is also at the creative forefront of new chamber music festivals in the Okanagan Valley and in Lliria, Spain, a UNESCO city of music.

Passionate about teaching the next generation, he has been invited to give masterclasses at the Académie Rainier III in Monaco, Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary, and the Victoria Conservatory among others. Cameron is grateful for the support of the Canada Council for the Arts, Sylva Gelber Foundation, and CBC/Radio-Canada in his projects.
